Course overview

Most Power BI training teaches the buttons. This course teaches the model — because the buttons are easy and the model is where reports go wrong.

The pattern is familiar to anyone who has inherited a Power BI file: it worked when it was built, then a second fact table arrived, the totals stopped reconciling, and nobody could say why. That is almost never a visual problem. It is a grain problem, a relationship problem, or a filter-context problem, and all three are decided in the first hour of building a model.

You will work through the full path — connecting and cleaning in Power Query, shaping a star schema, writing DAX that behaves predictably under filters, choosing visuals that answer the actual question, then publishing with refresh and row-level security that hold up in front of an audience who did not build it.

Who this course is for

Analysts, reporting officers, finance and operations staff who already work with data — typically in Excel — and need to produce reporting that other people depend on. You should be comfortable with spreadsheets, formulas and the idea of a table of records. No programming background is assumed; DAX is taught from first principles.

How the course is taught

Five modules, each building one layer of a working report. Every lesson ends with a Check your understanding prompt for immediate retrieval practice, and every module closes with a graded knowledge check whose questions map to that module's tasks. A final assessment covers the whole build at the end.

Concepts are introduced against a single running example — a retailer with sales, returns, stores and a calendar — so each new idea lands on a model you already understand rather than on a fresh abstraction.

Assessment

Five module knowledge checks plus a final assessment, each at a 70% pass mark, with unlimited attempts and worked feedback on every question. Feedback explains *why* an answer is right, because a check that only reports a score tests recall while one that explains teaches.

Recognition and scope

This course is aligned to the domains assessed by Microsoft's PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst certification, and is useful preparation for it. It is not a Microsoft certification, is not awarded or endorsed by Microsoft, and completing it does not confer PL-300. The exam is booked and sat separately with Microsoft. What you receive here is an EduQan certificate of completion, verifiable by any employer through our public credential check.

Progression

Learners who complete this commonly move on to data modelling at scale, Power Query's M language, or a broader analytics path. It also pairs naturally with our Data Analysis & Data Literacy certificate, which covers the SQL and statistical grounding this course assumes only lightly.
